Hello and thanks for the answer. Life still can be found here.
I'm anything but confident about this. I've tried to read tutorials but I'm feeling somewhat short about them... let's hope somebody steps up with advice. Specialists are quite hard to find these days!
I guess I should have developed some kind of interest to Xbox 10 years ago.

Hi everyone. Been modding xboxs at a pretty novice level for about 3 years now. Finally decided do hdd upgrade for the first time about a month ago. Soldered up my first usb adapter about a week later. Main xbox is a halo edition but have about 10 or so black of probably every version save for 1.5. Why not when you can find them on the cheap so easily now a days. Just got the parts to attempt an eeprom reader. Favorite dash is unleashedx haven't done much with evox and xmbc although I intend to when free time becomes more plentiful. Became interested in softmodding Xboxes because of a love for retrogaming. I keep my old consoles on display in the game room but much rather play my games on xbox if I can because of emulator features like fast forward and save states. I do play new consoles but prefer games from xbox back before the practice of dlc and microtransactions made almost every game feel incomplete on purchase. Anyways I have been lurking in the shadows of xbox mod scene for quite sometime but have decided to step in the light recently because information seems to be harder and harder to come by. I'm hoping to pick some people's brains on issues I have been coming across and hopefully become knowledgeable enough to help out some others in return. I may be late to the party but as awesome and versatile as an original modded xbox is I'm optimistic that there are plenty of people not ready to move on from this wonderful console.

A friend of mine says, hey you know a little about PC's, think you can Mod my Xbox? I said, You can do that? He tells me about all what you can do to them. I said sure I will try, that was two weeks ago. So when I say I am a n00b at this, it's in earnest. I am loving this experience have gathered up several Xbox's and am on a mission to repair and Mod them, many versions from 1.0 to 1.6. One for my friend and I am upgrading my old dusty Xbox as well.
Xbox 1 was the last console I ever bought, I have been a PC gamer ever since then, this journey has renewed my faith in consoles. I am also planning on helping a few underprivileged kids in my neighborhood with a couple.
So I would like to say Thanks for this treasure trove of information and all of you whom have contributed to this, and Yes I do believe this is still current, at least for us Johnny come lately's!

So you need help with a softmod eh? lol.. no problem i know just the guy.
Good my niece is gone to live with her grandparents which has given me my freedom back. Done loads of new UnleashX skins, wrote a new WMV-XMV converter so you can use WMV9. I know I said I wouldnt but I made a new Autobuilder. Rewrote the EXEs, now you have a choice between 13 different builds. And been working on my UnleashX.40. Pretty much have the games via USB licked, and am now working on recoding the update feature to connect to a different server to auto download skins and updates. Oh and I did a new NKPatcher, hitting a wall on signing the saves, but its used in Autobuilder V3 since theres no signing req with it. Im in a new project called Revive Retro compilling complete ROM sets and best emus, for all systems, Im covering XBOX and PC. Go figure
I can upload up to 5.4GB files which makes it perfect for my HDM installers
You sound like the perfect person to talk to about this. I'm just installed UnleashX and I'm trying to make some high quality skins. So far I've been trying to use UnleashX Toolbox to make the skins. It took me a while to figure it out it but I'm having an issue with some of my source scripts not showing up in the dash when it's rendered by the Xbox. When I look at the .xml file in wordpad the source scripts are in there but they won't show up. Also UnleashX Toolbox is old and only outputs the background image in low res but I just substitute the image with a high res one before I FTP it to the Box. I can open the .xml file and edit it with wordpad to readjust the locations for the items and I can get everything perfectly placed and looking awesome but I can't seem to get 4 source scripts to show up in the dash. I don't know if it's because of overlapping locations or what. But my locations for all the scripts seem well seperated from each other by the left and top pixel counts.
UnleashX Toolbox seems a little lacking but I've read of a program here on HQ regarding making UnleashX skins with a program called UX Achitect. Do you know if that's still around to download? I searched everywhere for it. Xbins, here, Google. Couldn't find out one single thing about it. And I can also edit other peoples skins and insert my own images to but that has problems to. I think when you open an .xml file in wordpad, wordpad doesn't show hidden characters and if you delete any hidden characters it messes up the .xml files. You have to edit them in a certain way to avoid deleting hidden characters and messing up the formatting. I even edited a skin that says it was created in UX Architect. So, I guess UX Architect is out there somewhere. I just can't find it.
Also, do you know if there is an app for the Xbox 1 to take a screen shot that saves it to whatever folder so that you can FTP it back to your PC? Because I'm fixing to find a UX forum to ask questions and get help with the missing source script issues when the .xml file is rendered and I want to be able to post images of the skin and and the .xml file to show them my problem so I can get some answers and figure it out.
And oh yeah, is there a program to convert TTF fonts to XPR fonts that you know of? So far I've I just scavenged .xpr fonts from existing skins.
Right now I'm trying to rework my favorite Evox skin into an UnleashX skin. Soon as I get the bugs worked out I'll post it here and even upload the skin here if I can. It looks Fn awesome.

UnleashX does that - Left thumbstick + black button press. Saves to Z:\ if that's full Y:\, if that's full X:\. BMP format images.

I didn't know you could run scripts in a skin to output content on the screen.

There's such a tool in the Xbox XDK to do so.

Nice,
P.S. Rocky5 has an app to convert Evox skins to UnleashX skins. From what I've heard, requires a bit.of tweaking the skin.xml to get everything just right after the automatic process completes. (I've never used it myself.)

Now that I've got going on making my own skins from scratch I'm gonna have fun trying to come up with epic orginals. There's like one or two more Evox skins that I got ideas on though.

I have been keeping an eye on the Xbox 1 site for the past few months and have noticed a dramatic drop in activity, haven't you?? Well, the Xbox 1's hay day is over, sure its great for homebrew and to muck about modding it with XBMC etc etc, but we need HD!
I still have my Xbox 1, and plan on always having one as long as i can, they are the best for homebrew stuff like emus and a portable game system, movie player too.
anyway, are there any newbies still around?? We will still help out best we can, so browse around the site first and then ask your questions in the forums.
Upgrading to Xbox 360???

Same here..........................but there are more active original Xbox forums than this, not sure why but that is the unassailable truth.
As for the Xbox slowly fading away I think that is far from being correct. There's been the recent reintroduction of Xbox online gaming functionality via Insignia. Additionally I've noticed a resurgent interest in chipping, with new chips and cheap chips still being readily available.
The relative ease of modding Xboxes in general means the interest in it has continued and remains a very important part of the scene.
With so many working Xboxes still being available, reasonably cheaply, and most of the games' catalogue likewise, one way or another, I'd say it is arguably in a more active and healthy state now than it was when this thread was first started.
