Alright, thanks.
I will look those over again just in case and then see about aquiring a new cable from somewhere.(not like they are stocked anywhere anymore)
Do I need a 40 or 80 pin one?
if its a ide drive under i say 320gb and under a normal xbox cable will work if sata you need a 80wire 40pin cable which is only a couple dollars but even upgrading it for these other ones help too. _________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Please correct me if I am mistaken, but I do not have EvoX dash installed right now and can not boot a HeXEn DVD.
Because of that I wanted to flash EvoX first via the easy SmartXX flash option, but I do not have the files.(can't find them anymore) for that.
The BIOS dot bin files to flash are inside the Hexen 2018 dot iso (XISO) file. You can extract the files from this XISO format ISO (it's not in a standard ISO-9660 format that PCs use but a special Xbox ISO format.)
There are many more pages accessible via links on this page to explain other software operations of the SmartXX BIOS and hardware installation.

I think I need to apologize asking for a .bin
Did not realize those are VIP downloads and how asking for those is just scummy.
The hacked BIOSes are available from the xbins FTP server and a couple of web sites that have a backup copy of those files accessible via a web browser:
You'll find them under the Console Based Applications/bios subfolders. There are many different BIOSes available. The most commonly used and latest BIOSes are in the evolution-x, Xecuter/Xecuter 2 and iND-BiOS subfolders.

In the meantime I did manage to flash evox via lan and that is nice, but did not actually resolve my issue.
Still getting a 09 error as before.
Have the feeling that maybe it wasn't the HDD afterall.
Most of the times, the IDE cable is not properly connected when you see this error. Please reattach the ide cable. Not only to the harddisk drive but also to the dvd drive. ALso try to reconnect the ide cable to the motherboard.
Press pretty hard so it goes all the way in. Make sure it is seated straight and proper in the drives and the motherboard. If you still have an error 7. Try another ide cable. If that won't work try another harddisk. If there is still no go, try to set the jumpers on the rearside of the harddisk drive. Set it to master or cable select. If still no succes, good luck and sell your xbox to me.
8 - kernel - No HDD found
Please make sure your xbox hdd is attached properly. Most of the times the Ide cable came loose, or isn't seated properly in the IDE port of your harddisk. Also, make sure the power supply cables are intact and working.
Make sure the ide cable is also connected properly to the rest of the hardware (dvd and motherboard).
9 - kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)
Not very common error, please try another harddisk.
Check all connections of the IDE cable from the motherboard to the DVD drive and hard drive. Make sure the hard drive is powering on.
If you have a multimeter, verify the voltage levels provided to the hard drive are correct to power it.
At the hard drive Molex connector, connect the meter's red (+) lead (make sure it is setup to measure DC voltage levels) to either the red or yellow wire and the black (-, common) lead to the black wire.
When the two leads are making contact to the red and black wires, the meter should read +5Vdc.
And, to the yellow and black wires, the meter should read +12Vdc.
If the voltage levels are too low, the hard drive may not be recieving enough power to operate. Report back here with the voltage levels.

Somehow missed the last two posts(no email notification).
As is I picked up a different 40pin cable for testing.(got it for free from the local games shop! Got a reminder how expensive games are now) Which I reckon is alright as the IDE drives I have are all below 300GB.
Sadly still am not getting past 07. Did use the opportunity of having pulled out everything to remove what dust was still inside though. That was nice.
Flashing evox(for 1.6 which is my version, according to the numbers) works well over the network access.
Am I missing something in regards to the hdd I plugged in before flashing? Any special steps to take for those?
I did plug it into my computer before to check that they work.

Check your jumper settings either try them at cable select or master if that don’t work then
Error 07 is either the cable or the hard drive most time it’s the cable but since you replaced the cable I am really guessing the hard drive is toast are you able to hook it up to the computer is the drive unlocked? _________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Hello everyone, it has been some time since I last posted.
Xbox has been gathering some dust on a shelf in the meantime.
I am still somewhat stuck now that I have some freetime to try again...
Now running a different IDE HDD with a new 80 pin cable and evox m8plus for the 1.6 flashed.
So far so good. But when trying to boot I get to the splash screen and then get stuck there.
I do not know what common causes for this could be?

Sorry I haven't been through the entire thread.
Your v1.6 Xbox is chipped with a Evox M8+ v1.6 type BIOS - correct?
What dashboard did you actually install? Indeed is there any dashboard installed at all because if not that would explain the problem described?

That is okay, but I have to admit I am somewhat lost in terminologyright now. If you could help me clear that up that would be great.
When I start my Xbox I get the smartxx screen that allows me to do some basic operations like network configurations, boot a partition or flash one.
This also allows me to do so vie browser over network in lieu of the normal ftp for convenience.
Is this not the dash?
Then what is the difference specifically between evox/evolution x and how I install them? I seem to get the two hopelessly confused.

I do not know the SMARTXX chip and how it works but it sounds as if it has its own menu which is probably accessed by pressing the power button or eject button in a specific way.
I've just checked and whilst I cannot find a user manual one of the SMARTXX chip fitting guides included information which suggest that if you press the Power button you boot into the SMARTXX OS (Operating System).
That's what I guess you're referring too.
Try starting the Xbox using the Eject/Close button and it does what is called a "Direct Boot" presumably to whatever dashboard has been installed.
Do not get mixed up with the EvoX (Evolution-X) dashboard and the Evox BIOS - two completely different things.
Dashboards you may have are the aforesaid EvoX or UnleashX or XBMC. There are others like Avalaunch and Anod but neither is likely to be installed as the main dashboard now.
It is possible you do not have a main dash installed which may explain your previously described problem. If so it should be a simple matter of using an installer disc like AID or HeXEn to install one.
The disc should be burned on DVD-R (ImgBurn recommended) and you'll probably have to cold boot it.
But TBH I'm on unkown ground is regard to the specifics of this because I do not know the SMARTXX chip. I would assume you'd just start by using eject then close it again with disc in place. But it seems like an awkward method to use. The chip itself might well have the tools to install a dashboard built in to its OS.
You really need more advice and from somebody who knows the SMARTXX chip.

You may not know the chip, but it is the best advice I got yet!
Did check and notice that I likely messed the Evox/EvoX issue up. Files of the proper download look different at the very least.
Sadly direct boot isn't getting me anywhere right now.
I do still have the DVDs from over a decade ago, but no matter what I do it still boots into the smartxx menu instead of the dvd.
In lieu of that I'll try the ftp option. But that looks like some trial and error for me because I don't know exactly what file the system needs to flash via lan/browser.
I'll try some things and will be back.

Well, it has been a crazy year and I never really got any further on this xbox.
In fact it just gathered dust and I realized I lack the skills(or patience to aquire skills) to fix whatever is wrong. Plus relearning some keys with the delphi emulator(still holding out hope for ssx3 on xb is just less hassle and a little less electronic clutter in my flat.
Figured I'd ask here first if anyone wants the xbox. Would send it from Germany for cost.(and whatever it is worth it to you if you get it to run)
PS: Not sure if email notification works? I'll try to check the thread weekly.
