what you need to do is reinstall the dash either use aid/hexen/slayers 1 of them should load as long as your dvd drive works. if the chip is working correctly it should boot one of those discs fine. ive had this error a couple times had to either do that or try another drive lol _________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Hmm I see, I've been trying to find an AID download all day and the ones I found downloaded a corrupted archive or gave me a checksum error, though I have found another. But while I get to burning the image, I tried booting a game to see if it boots but it just went to the error screen - I've read around that the xbox searches for the internal clock in both the MS dash and custom dash and then spews the error.
UPDATE: So I ended up burning a RW with the Slayers Installer and popped it in the drive that I replaced in the xbox a week ago (the one that should be working) and it doesn't seem to run. I found some CD-R in the drive that I ordered and just found out it has Slayer's on it - put it in...doesn't boot! I'm not sure if it's the drive itself or the discs but I'm getting no luck. The only thing I can think of is finding a Male-to-Female DB-25 cable as @kaos_engr pointed out (thanks!) and updating the chip's bios using the X2 BIOS Manager. I think I'm on the right lines...??

You went through each bank by iteself like Bank 1 on the rest off all the way through to bank 4 and then 1 and 2 on and 3 and 4 off and then 3 on and 4 on im not sure how it was on the older xecuter chips? you might have to do that and update the bios on the chip if nothing else is going to work. Where are you located? edit nevermind over seas from me ha. I would try to get that connector i came more in on the newer x2.6-x3 so i dont have as much knowledge as the older ones but there is many smart members on here.

If power is removed, the system will lose the date/time thus error 16. BUt, if it's booting a modded BIOS the clock check should be bypassed. All depends how old teh modified BIOS is if it supports that feature.
Generally, FRAG (Flash Red And Green) with a modchip installed occurs when the LPC connections have gone bad. Solderless adapter moved and lost proper connection to the pads. Or, a bad BIOS load.
Either install a softmod or hardmod (modchip or tsop reflash) not both.
Xbox DVD drive doesn't like most burned CD's try DVD-R at 4x for Hexen 2017.

Yeah, I can confirm that since it's a pretty old chip that's installed, the BIOS is outdated and can't seem to boot passed the clock check. Thing is, there was a one weak solder joint on that leaked capacitor, but from what state it was in, I don't even think that removing it caused this issue (or it may have...).
Also apologies for my terms before, but I used a DVD+RW 4x burnt with Slayer's and it didn't boot, but I don't think that sort of drive supports RW. This disc that came inside the replacement is a Maxwell DVD-R (probably at 4x speed) loaded with Slayer - assuming that the previous owner used it on their system.

You can get every edition of XBMCID (virtualy identical to AID) SID and Babylon (a newer "version"of AID)
And as long as your chip supports MS Boot and hacked boot Babylon can be installed alongside your chip. The MS Boot would simply become softmod boot

On the subject of disc media type I've found that burning speed is rarely of significance if the Xbox DVD drive is in good condition. I always burn at the lowest supported speed too (that's usually x4 for DVD-R) and use ImgBurn by preference.
However in tests I did a couple of years ago I included various higher speed burns. I found in all but one case it made no difference to a Xbox disc drive's ability to boot them. Very much the same applies to the burning program too; all four I tested produced Xbox bootable discs except in one particular test.
As kaos_engr indicates DVD-R is, confirmed by these tests and years of recommendation from experts on various Xbox forums, the only universally compatible disc media.

Could you elaborate on what the LPC connections are?

Thanks for the links! I downloaded Babylon2 6-13 but I'm unsure what needs doing here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing I need to connect the hard-drive directly to the PC to allow a desktop-sided version of AID or Slayer without booting from discs on the xbox side? If I can get access to the drive (through an IDE SATA adaptor), then would it be viable to transfer the eeprom or stock MS dashboard files?
I'm going to pick up a parallel printer port to connect to the chip via USB. I think re-flashing the bios might solve it. I've looked up my backup of the bios.bin through X2 BM and attached an image below. I don't know where I'll find an updated bios file.
@SCARFACE:
I'll admit I haven't tried all, but I've done some configurations of the different bank settings but it makes no difference unfortunately. As a matter of fact, what do the different configs do?
@ArchAngle:
That's a great picture, really helpful! I've linked a couple images to my DVD drive (and HDD since it's not stock) that I'm using.
I can see that the Verbatim DVD+RW is unreliable on Thomson drives and that's probably why my Philips DVD+RW is not working. I'm not sure why the Maxwell DVD-R doesn't work. I have a pack of Aone DVD+R (8x 8.5GB) laying around which I can test, though it's a double layered disc unlike the single layer ones I've been trying.
Samsung Drive:
Reads all CD-R/RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Will not read DVD+R/RW
Thomson Drive:
Will not read CD-R
Will only read SOME (generally expensive media) CD-RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Reads all DVD+R/RW
Philips Drive:
Will not read CD-R
Will read SOME (generally expensive media) CD-RW
Reads all DVD-R/RW
Does not read DVD+R/RW

Maxell DVD-R's often come from a variety of manufacturers, that's why I included that info with the table. You can use ImgBurn to ID the disc manufacturer.
I was very down on Maxell at one time as I had two bad batches of 10pk Maxell DVD-R. But since then I've had to use them a lot, and never had a repeat of that experience.
The problem with that second disc drive compatibility list is that it doesn't distinguish between the two different Samsung drives. The 605Bs, in my tests, were compatible with everything even DVD+R. But, as you can see from the results, that was only test where the burning program used seemed to matter ie. ImgBurn.
If I'd only been testing one disc drive of a particular type, as in the case of the Thomson and the Philips, maybe that could be put that down to the drive's age, wear and tear, media problem or just a bad burn of some sort. But identical results for the two Samsung 605Bs with the 8 test discs burned can not be ignored.
For compatibility the best Samsung 605F is actually no better than the Thomson although both are better than the ageing Philips.
The Philips, I think, is better mechanically than either Samsung (far fewer tray eject/close issues) and my Thomson, despite its reputation, has never given any trouble at all.
For me the best disc drive is the Hitachi. It may not like any CD based disc media but it works with all DVD types. Mechanically it sounds and is in practice, after 12 years frequent use in one case, ultra reliable.

I've finally cracked it, the xbox boots back into EvoX, no more error 16!
Unfortunately, the solution is really anti-climactic, and I'm beating myself for it. Since all the discs weren't booting, I thought the last resort here was to try my previous drive, and so I simply swapped the it out - that's it, the xbox recognised it's old mate and booted as usual
Though the drive fails to load any discs, I'm having these questions:
* Is the xbox doing some sort of serial check to make sure the DVD drive remains stock?
* If so, can this be unlocked like the HDD?
- It could be the 'replacement' DVD drive is faulty, but I can't make sure this is the case if the above scenario occurs.
* Can disc installers like AID/Slayer/Hexen/Babylon be executed on the xbox by FTP'ing the files and loading an .xbe through XBMC or boXplorer?
- EDIT: Yes.
While I'm bumbed out that the replacement drive was causing all these problems, the main thread topic has now been 'resolved'.
I want to thank everyone here as I've learnt so much and I'm glad the scene is still active!

Modchips load their BIOS from flash memory across the LPC (Low Pin Count) bus) designed by Intel. They signal the MPCX, ground D0, to load from this bus instead of from the onboard BIOS flash.

Babylon2 is a PC based installer maker. You install it on PC and run it and it will give you the choice of making PC based installers (for doing HDD upgrades and hotswap mods) USB based gamesave installers, DVD based softmod installers, DVD based emulator installers, can be installed on XBOX as an app and softmods via FTP
For the DVD drive you can go trailer park. If you have a PC IDE DVD ROM kicking around and a molex power splitter you can hook it to the XBOX. It wont read retail discs but will read burned discs. As long as the power cable is still running to the XBOX DVD it will pass disc check and boot, even on a softmod or unmodded XBOX
Since your backup HDD works Id suggest using either Chimp or Ava Backup/XBOXHDM/XPLORER360 to image it and rebuild the problem HDD.
