My first Xbox board is out of commission for now. Needs new eyelets pressed in several rear mounted primary capacitor slots. I don't have a working DVD drive now by the way, the nature of this line of questions.

To plug and play the old HDD in a new unmodded virgin board of the same type (1.1 of course, you know me). Could I just put the old modchip (X2 4983 BIOS) on the new LPC with the old HDD and run it? Does this BIOS support HDD/board swapping?

The old board was born PAL, the new born NTSC, though the old eeprom was flashed NTSC by HeXEn before retirement. On the old board is a SHARP TSOP and the stock BIOS, the LPC, the modchip.

If X2 4983 alone does not suffice, could I run the old HDD by swapping both the new TSOP and video encoder with the old set, then adding the modchip?

As long as the HDD isnt locked and you are running some form of patched BIOS (chip or TSOP) you can whack the HDD in and carry on. Plug and play

If the new XBOX isnt hardmodded then you would need to dump the eeprom from the new XBOX and copy it to the old one. Then use Configmagic to unlock the HDD and lock it with the new XBOXs eeprom. Obviously you need the XBOX modded to dump the eeprom but you dont need the XBOX modded to run the HDD. The XBOX of course wouldnt see anything beyond 10GB though C, E and X,Y,Z partitions. Any F/G would vanish (its still there just wont show)

Isn't locked? I thought the boot cycle whether on stock or custom BIOS locked and unlocked the HDD every boot cycle, or were you just suggesting the possibilty of a hotswap?

So most every BIOS supports the HDD swap eh? Damn I love you programmers, you make my life so much easier.

Out of curiosity, is there any possibilty of running the stock BIOS off the TSOP of one board on another of the same type to unlock the original unmodded HDD? By swapping the TSOP chips, would you be able to run the old HDD, or would the new boards serial number or other details create conflict and boot error?

Only stock BIOS and softmod require a locked HDD. You can run your HDD locked on a TSOP/chipped XBOX but its not required. The custom BIOS bypasses the XBOX kernel removing the locked HDD req.

As for unlocking the HDD the BIOS doesnt really play a meaningful part. You would have to switch the eeprom chip for that. But as I said above thats not needed as it can all be done by software. You can also use Configmagic to flash the eeprom chip so that all your XBOXs use the same eeprom so even if reverted to stock the HDDs would be interchangable. You can also cheat by putting in a game and letting it boot (this will unlock the HDD) then yank the IDE cable from the HDD. That will prevent the XBOX from locking the HDD when you power off the XBOX

That is very good to know. I can just mount a modchip plug and play an HDD with UnleashX on it, flash the TSOP with HeXEn, leave the chip for at least two BIOS options, or move it to another box. Easy as capitalism!

I've used chimp and Configmagic before, I was just posing a scenario where you don't have any option to add more software, don't have Configmagic or chimp261812 on the HDD, or a working DVD-drive and you were plumb stuck with soldering as you're only means. I'm not looking for the easiest way, just exploring possibilities.

To be perfectly honest I would choose the solder method over the software method if there is a choice in most any scenario. It feels easier yet more accomplishing to me knowing my material handling made something happen. I think I may actually feel a spiritual fulfillment after an LPC header or RAM chip install.

Ah, the old boot and tug eh? Now there is a practical use of computing process knowledge and physical force. Just make sure you don't pull out the molex power as well as the PATA before powering down, otherwise at best you are seriously reducing that HDD's lifespan. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that, it's for future readers.
