I've got a drive, which I think is a BenQ DH-16W1P.
I've had a look at the tutorials on here, XS, and some archive of PSXBASE, which all say that I need to wire up several signals to the power connector for things to work. I've found a few of these on the DVD drive's board, but I can't find 'ready' and I'm not sure which is 'tray in', since there is TRINA, TRINB, TINC, etc, and a TYIN.

There are 5 signal wires, the fifth wire(status LED) is not required.
:Eject,Trayin, Trayout, Ready & StatusLED.
I have done some Samsung Drive's that were not listed in any tut's.
On these Samsung drive's.
Traystate0= Tray in.
Traystate2= Tray out.
Traystate1= Ready.
On another Samsung
IOA=Tray in.
IOD= Tray out.
IOB= Ready.
What firmware Does BenQ require for flashing.
Let me know your findings on this drive thanks.

I am looking for a person to hack firmware for the early Samsung drive.
I would like to make other drives work on Xbox's.
Maybe some of this info can help you.

Im pretty sure Ive got the firmware on my server, will check and up it for you ken.
As for Benq there was never a custom firmware released for it so you will never be able to play original discs with it. Burned discs should work fine though. If it has a MediaTek chip you can try to flash it but it may just brick. Only brands of drives Ive ever seen-heard succesfuly flashed are Philips and Hitachi-LG. Benq didnt become part of Philips until 2007 so who knows.
An easy way to do it solder free is to pull the PCB from an old XBOX DVD and mount it to the top of the DVD craddle, and mount the new DVD above it. Then just have the XBOX DVD power cable plugged into the old PCB. It will pass the disc check so you dont get hit with an error screen.

So I looked around on the boards a bit more. Can't see a chip with MediaTek on it, but I may have passed it over? Would it be ones of the big ones? A TSOP chip?
An advantage of modchips is the ability to skip the DVD check - therefore no errors :)
I don't mind about playing originals really. I have all of my games saved to HDD. If I ever need to play a game, simply swap the old drive back in.
One of the reasons I'd like to put a new drive in is that my Samsung drive, one of the good ones, ejects discs while they are spinning, which doesn't look too good. Might this be one of the cables, maybe Ready, being broken? _________________

@ Prehistoricman If it does brick, it cannot be reflashed with MTKwin flash.
You will have to take out the bios chip and flash it externally with a programer.
MTKflash will not back up your previous bios, It will be Lost for good if you flash.
Your Mediatek chip is the big one(MT1898)Controller chip, Is not a bios chip.
I can't see your bios chip in any of your pictures.
Most DVD drives, BIOS chips are housed in a 32 pin PLCC package and can be in a socket, Examples below.
There is no bios chip that i can see on your board. best not to flash that drive it may brick. You cannot play original discs with it.

the tray switch that detects open close tray.
I had this same problem with a Samsung drive spiting disc's out,Ejects by its self.
This can be done to fix other drive's that just eject the tray for no reason.

There is two types of tray limit switches
The first is two vertical prongs
The second type is single lever.
Most Samsung's Drives have the two vertical prongs one
for tray close,
the other for tray open.
I will take some pictures and update my post soon.
This is Samsung PC DVD drive modded for Xbox SD-616F
Would be similar to your Samsung drive.
I got the pictures in the wrong order.
Start at the bottom picture.

It may be able to be flash with Philips Firmware,
I don't know if US Philips Xbox drive's have MediaTek Controller chips,
Our Philips drives in AU are a lot different and don't have the MediaTek chip.
AU model VAD-6035/21 Controller chip is Philips SAA7817HL
If these AU Philips drive's stop reading DVD's don't wast money replacing the laser
throw the thing in the bin, Controller Chip crapped out, it's died.
Does anyone know the other Philips model and
Controller chips part number in the US model thanks.
I am also looking for one dead Xbox Original Samsung DVD rom drive
The best one of the two Samsung's SDG-605B Model,
I have never came across one to see what they look like inside.
I already have the shit one SDG-605F reads DVD's only.
So i can work out the proper spots where data signal links go on pcb's when modding PC DVD drive's for Xbox's.

There was actualy 3 models of the Philips. 2 released in North America (v1 and v2) and a PAL edition. The N.A ones were quite good and do have a MediaTek chip. Ive heard nothing but bad things about the PAL model though. I have both v1 and 2 when I get a chance Ill pop em open and take some pics. You can easily tell a v1 from v2 just by the case. The back bottom half of a v2 is indented where as v1 isnt.

As for your question Prehistoricman, unless you can find a way to confirm ones been flashed before theres no way of knowing if its an actual Benq drive or if its like they do now where they just take the same drive and slap Philips on one and Benq on the other. Something else to keep in mind is thats an RW drive and far as I know the firmware flashing is for ROM drives.

AU Philips drive's have that big lump on the bottom for the crappy tall laser.
I did not know there was three models of Philips out there
There had to be one good one out of them,(MT chip)

Dam that Philips drive is good & heavy Duty,
Had a disc smashed into the spindle and still works great,
I wont to make one of those if there is a PC equivalent to it.
do they read as good as Samsung drives,

Does V1 & V2 have different lasers & the same firmware?.
I modded the Hitachi-LG DVD Rom works ok on a stock Xbox,
reads original games & CDs & DVDs
but not as fast as a Samsungs, But just as good.
