I've had a mod'd XBox for a few years, a gift from my younger brother, and one day it started booting with an 05 error.
I guess some how my disk become unlocked, so I thought I'd grab the original installer disk (Slayer 2.5) my brother had made and relock the disk, however the Xbox doesn't recognize it.
After trying burning the latest available version of Slayer a few times, I decided it was a good time to check out AID and give it a shot.
I bt'd down version 3.1 (it had the most seeds available and would only take an hour as opposed to the 24 hours with the few seeds available for version 4.5) and started working with it, but I am still having problems getting my XBOX to boot with any disk I've burned.
Here's the XBOX situation:
MFG Date: 2002-05-31
Prod iD: 621210619214002
Philips Drive
Model: VAD6011/21(POS)
DVD516X-003(AC M)
Mod Chip: X2.3B Lite
I've tried burning to 3 different types of disks:
Verbatim DVD-R
Sony DVD+R
Sony CD-R
I've set DVD Decrypter to the lowest possible speed (4x), I've tried both writers in one PC, and another in another PC, and nothing works.
I put the fresh disk in the XBox, power it down, power it back on and immediately after the XBox splash I get the "Your Xbox requires service" message with "05" in the upper left corner.
I even tried adding the 1gb dummy file to the ISO a few times, and I've tried burning with PowerISO, and optimizing with Qwix101.
All a no go...
I picked up a used XBox at Goodwill just to see if it would recognize/boot the disks and it doesn't either, although it "chews" on the disk a bit longer before.
So, while I invest the time to BT the lastest AID down, I figured I'd hit up the forum and see if anyone had some suggestions.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

From what you describe Id say your chip has shit the bed. Locked, Unlocked shouldnt matter with a chip, so Id say the chip has died or is dying which is why the drive being unlocked is causing you issues. Best course of action is to quasi hotswap the drive. Open your XBOX, if the chip has a switch turn it off, unhook the dvd drive (both power and data) remove the hard drive from the tray and loosen the IDE cable. Put the XBOX beside your PC, put SID5 Pimped Final in the PC, turn on the XBOX, soon as you get the error screen unplug the IDE from the hard drive (dont touch the power) and hook it to the PC and turn on the PC (dont have any other HDD connected to the PC). Follow this tut to rebuild and mod the HDD http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-301.html
When done turn off the PC unhook the HDD and hook it back to the XBOX and turn the XBOX off. Hook the DVD drive back up and you should now have a fully softmodded and functional XBOX

Ok, that's weird. I was under the impression that even on the unmodded XBox, a properly burned AID disk would still be recognized and load up.
Am I mistaken in that?

Yep, unmodded XBOX cant run unsigned code. Only burned discs that will work in a unmodded XBOX are music cds.

Funny enough they did have a few old school games on Music Cartridges back in the day.
Not to throw it off topic, but if you can flash a PSP with a tiff file then maybe someday someone will discover a way to mod an xbox Multimedia way which would be really cool and easier then teaching your grandparents how to use a computer.

Ok, when I get the chance, I'll first test the switch on the chip... Maybe the switch that enables/disables the chip is the problem...
