I went to start up my original xbox tonight (my friends hook a few of the old ones together every week and play halo 2)
It was working last time we played, but now all of the sudden it won't read the games or dvds. Everything starts up fine but when I insert a game it either says it's not a readable disc or it acts as if no disc was inserted.
I worked on many xbox 360's and I know that they embed a key in that drive and you have to change a board in the dvd drive in order to swap drives. Is it the same on the original xbox?
The drive that it is in there is a samsung. I already tried replacing it with the drive from another xbox (it wasn't a samsung) and this did not work.
Also where can I get a replacement drive for this original xbox at a decent price?
Thanks for any help

Personally I think your best bet would be to open the case and move around the laser a bit, that fixed it for me once, if it still is refusing to read a disc, then you would problably want to replace the laser. And a good place to look for a DVD Drive and a laser would be eBay. Any other questions feel free to post them in the forums. _________________

I adjusted the laser's pot (tried adjusting the intensity first then even nudged the other a 100 ohms higher and 100 lower) already and there was no improvement. Same problem.
Does the drive have firmware like the xbox 360 that mates the dvd drive to that specific xbox?
You can swap DVD drives around with no issues, doesnt matter what version console it comes from.
Is it softmodded, did you try deleting the contents of E/Cache & the contents of folders X, Y & Z ? _________________

I swapped out the dvd drive for another drive out of another xbox and it worked fine. So I ordered a new laser off of ebay. Hopefully that will fix the issue.

I replaced the laser now but it is still not working... now it just sits on the xbox screen but does not start playing the disc.
There was two desolder bridges right next to each other on this laser. A quick touch of the soldering iron took these off.
Anyone have any ideas?
