Hi!
I bought a used Xbox at an online auction. The xbox was softmodded and included XBMC (ancient version though).
My plan was always to update the XBMC (and keep it updated) as it was the main reason I bought it. I also thought of adding a bigger hard drive so I thought this would be a risk free oportunity for a fresh start. If it fails, I just plug in the old hard drive and still have a usable Xbox.
Warning: I am very confortable with PC hardware and software issues, very confortable dealing with linux, but this is my first contact with the XBox world (any console for that matter). I also do not like to bother people in forums before I search for the information online, so I have tried several things before posting here
Following an online tutorial I created a boot disk with xboxhdm and was able to successfully create a copy of the old hard drive into the new one (plus the extra space). I successfully ran that copy and I'm starting to become a pro in this step since I've done it several times so far
Note: AID does not start with the blank hard drive for me... I do not know if this is a particular issue with my configuration or if this is how it is supposed to be, but I can only start AID from XBMC
1st attempt:
I ran AID and, following the manual, I went to the Format/Prepare HD, and selected the "Format Large HD".
Then, I proceeded to the "One-Click installs" and selected "Single Boot with Virtual C". Then I selected "XBMC dashboard".
The process failed with something like:
"Batch process failed
E:\BACKUP\MS not present"
At the time I was in a hurry and had to turn off my xbox which meant... start over...
2nd attempt (after new restore with xboxhdm):
I read somewhere that I should install the MSDash to make sure that it is updated, otherwise the installer might not like it. So the first thing I did was install the MS Dash. Then, I tried the "One click install" again using the same steps as before and I got the same error.
This time I did not restart the XBox (since I already knew I'd be screwed) so I proceeded to a third attempt.
3rd attempt:
I formatted the hard drive using the Format/Prepare HD.
I installed the MSDash.
I installed the XBMC dash.
So far so good - no errors.
Better yet... reboot..... XBMC
After about an hour configuring XBMC, it froze while accessing the "Listen to music" option (MediaStream skin).
Reboot... oh no! it's that green thing that I have no use for... MSDASH!!!!
And of course, the AID disk must be scratched or dirty says the MSDASH
I am going over to my brothers house to borrow his desktop again (since I have only laptops at home) to reformat the hd using xboxhdm and try again... but I am getting a little bit tired of this trial and error
So, to those of you who actually read this whole post, any pointers on any mistakes I made in my previous attempts would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Ok.. I'll give it a shot as I have been there only months ago now... If you have your old HDD on a XBOXHDM boot disk . reinstall the old info on your new drive again, or put the old drive back in. pick one... then if you reinstall the new drive load aid disk again (doesn't work on a unmodded dash ie. MSdash or blank HDD it needs a modded dash) dont reformat the new drive XBOXHDM formats it for you. the format option on the aid disk is for chipped xboxes. make sure you use the softmod dashes, if you use the chipped dashes you will get that error ,, I did. also use the duel boot that way is you stuff anything up on your dash you can still reboot the AID disk. If you reinstall the old HDD install chimp from the AID disk to your HDD and use that,, very easy, just need a original MS joystick. Tut's available on this site. To install latest MSdash you just need to run a Xbox Live game Halo 2, Mechassault 2 etc. and try to go online with the network cable disconnected. After installing the new dash back it up. Also look at HOW TO SOFTMOD very easy all you need is a game (1 of 3 listed) a memory card or flash drive with cable and the SID files, which should be allready on your softmodded drive in your save games. Copy them to your mem card/ flash drive for later use. Ive done 1 xbox 7 times so far.. its my softmod tester. 4 softmoded and 1 chipped xbox in the house so far.

and if that does not work than you can try this tut http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-260.html when you load chimp onto the xbox and open it, if the screen turns green then use this tut http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-255.html , but only use it if the screen goes green.. if it does go green then you know that you have a xbox v1.6.. I just put a new hdd in my freinds xbox yesterday with chimp so give this a try.. if all else fails then hit us up and someone here will know what to do!! _________________ http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php

To BuddyHiggins:
Thank you for the link to the Chimp tutorial (I am running 1.4). I just need to get a Y-splitter and I can do the cloning at home
To spottty:
The XBOXhdm restores the old disk's content to the new disk. My problem is that the old disk is full of garbage and I wanted to start clean.
I will try to delete the files manually from AID's File manager, before installing the softmod XBMC dashboard. With your suggestions the cloning gets significantly easier so I can do a little more trial and error.
Does anyone have a clue as to why the Xbox booted XBMC the first time and MS DASH after the reboot?
Perhaps it was because XBMC crashed? Could the installation of XBMC become corrupt and the XBOX loaded MS DASH as an alternative?

Hello,
Check the folders you copy from your original harddrive to make the xbhdm disc ....... Look in folder E/ for a folder named `cache` - Delete the contents of that folder before using it on your xbhdm disc. _________________

did you do a single boot or a dual boot setup??
I don't know how to answer that
I formatted the HD using AID
Then I installed MS DASH from the Dashboard section
Finally I installed XBMC using the option "Install C Drive Dash (Softmod)" from the Dashboard Section

I will try that. I suppose this is to prevent the errors I got when I tried the "one-click install"?
