HI
Ive been looking around at how to install a bigger HDD.
I have found 2 ways to do it, one is connect the xbox to computer, get the eeprom, put the hard drive into the computer....
The other says connect your softmodded hard drive into a chipped xbox and do that process.
I already softmodded it.
Which way do you guys think is easiest for a beginner with a little computer knowledge? If I dont have a DVD burner, is that a problem? I bought DVD blanks, but I have a CDR burner. but my friend has a DVD burner.
What hard drive should i get, is it a laptop harddrive, or regular desktop? Havent opened up the box yet. I dont need 400 G, maybe 80-100 or whatever is normal.
Could you send some links i could read up more on? just wondering what way people prefer to do this.
Thanks for everyones help so far.

If you don't know if the xbox is 1.0-1.5 or a 1.6 you can try to use this to find out: http://www.xboxversions.com/
Hope that gets you on the right track man.

500 gig is really almost too much for an xbox anyways. For him it sounds like a 200 would be just fine. _________________

Sorry I forgot out an important word: 200 gig max for him. Sounds like a 120 might be right up his ally though. _________________

thanks again
i found that the xbox is the earlier one that i can use chimp with.
I tried for 3 days to find chimp. I had the auto installer program, but couldnt figure it out, but i was able to softmod it with action replay anyway, the program was in the community thing.
Is there anywhere that i can find chimp? i tried xbins, lime wire and other sites, but i only trust the people here.
i also have a quick question about xbins-- when i go in there, i tried to get atari7800-- it came through OK, when i tried unzipping it in my computer, it came up as program called video. i was able to ftp them to my computer, but they wouldnt do anything. the zip or the video folder. i know how to send nintendo from my chipped box. but someone else put all that stuff on that one.
thanks again for your help

Any Emu you need is on AID 4.20, you will need a bit client like bitcomet to get it and it has guides on how to burn the ISO file to disk.
Just download bit comet and install it to youe PC and go to the aid tracker and click on aid 4.20

I've had a Maxtor 160 GB in my box since 2004 and have never had any problems with it. It's also pretty quite.

I have been looking into the hard drive, all the different kinds. One question, what does buffer do? i have found from 2 MB to 64mb, does it matter playing games, will the 2 run slower? or wont I notice?

A drives buffer is an amount of RAM on the drive to store frequently accessed data from the drive. Since RAM is faster at transferring data than the drive head operation, it increases the speed of the drive. The more buffer on the drive, the more data that can be stored in the cache to decrease the amount of physical drive operation. Most drives today come with a 8MB drive buffer.
As for "does it matter playing games, will the 2 run slower? or wont I notice? " yes but i couldn't say by how much since i have never looked in to it.

Buffer doesn't really make a difference I don't think because I have a 8MB buffer on my HDD and my friend has a 4MB (old hdd). I play halo 2 on his xbox and everything loads just as fast off HDD as mine does. I think buffer only matters for computers. Still, if you can find a HDD that has a higher buffer than another for the same price I'd get the one with the bigger buffer. _________________
