Oh, god - it's like a nightmare.
A few weeks ago I managed to pull off an NDure softmod via hotswapping using the xbhdm version 1.9. It worked - I could boot UnleashedX. I could ftp XBMC and it ran wonderfully (after fixing a scraper issue). Life was wonderful.
Then I got ambitious.
I wanted to use a larger hard drive so I could save the games I had to it, while still streaming TV and movies from my desktop. Well, it turns out that I'm a retard.
See, after trying all the tutorials on a 40 gb drive I had lying around (compatability checks out) I kept getting an error 21 whenever I try to boot with this drive. In a fit of frustration, I tried using the XBHDM disc to clone my original drive onto the 40gb one. That didn't work.
Not only did that not work, but now I get an error 9 when I try to boot from the original drive. I've tried restoring the C partition, but no dice. I've got several backups of my EEPROM made with configmagic, but nothing is working. The original boots to an error 9, and the 40 gb still boots with an error 21. What's going on? What can I do?
It's like a nightmare.
EDIT: I can boot games (Halo 2 is the only one I've tried) using the 40gb drive, but trying it with the original drive still spits out an error 9.

Hey man welcome to the site. Hope you enjoy the HQ.
Your Xbox motherboard is having trouble communicating with the Hard Drive. Check cables, this is probably due to an ATA controller on the motherboard and not due to the hard drive itself. My recommendation for most is to replace the Motherboard and Hard drive as a pair. _________________

Have you tryed the build a hard drive from scratch option to see if you can get it back to stock?
If that works i would soft mod it with Sid.

Thankfully, the only games I have are the ones I own, so I've got all the original discs. I'm okay with losing my save games, too, 'cause it'll just give me a reason to play some great games (Halo, Indigo Prophecy, Call of Cthulhu, Advent Rising, etc) and it'll clear off the crap left behind by some of the worst games I've ever played (Wolverine's Revenge).
I'm trying the build drive from scratch now, but that's what I did with the 40gb drive, and it didn't work with that one. Since I can boot game discs with the 40gb, can I fix this with a newer game - will booting one reinstall the MS dash?
I'm trying to avoid replacing the mobo and drive, especially when I can just get a new xbox for half that price (~$50). Also, I don't like to let things stay broken, you know?

Okay - rebuilding the drive from scratch didn't work - I still get the error code 9. Now I'll try to boot the newest game I've got using the 40gb drive.
Wish me luck.

Nope. Going to xbl hangs when I try to create a new account. I can read savegames from the 40gbdrive when playing Advent Rising, but I still can't boot to the dash.
Any ideas?

Of the 40GB how much of the HDD is full?
ERROR 9 - kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)
Not very common error, please try another harddisk.

Unfotunately, I'm getting the error code 9 when I try to use the original xbox hard drive. The original drive is the one that won't boot either itself or to a game disc.
The 40gb drive will boot to a game disc, but not to the dash (it gives me an error code 21).

Ok so put in the 40GB and pop in the aid disk, try to reinstall you MS dash and see if it helps the error 21.
Try putting the stock HDD back up with xboxhdm and the locking tool with your eeprom.

I tried that, but both AID4.2 and Slayer's fail to boot. I've got AID4.2 burned to a DVD+R but I'll burn it to a DVD+RW and try that.

FINALLY!
I got the 40gb drive to work!
Nothing else worked, so I went back to the NDure disc I used in the first place, and it worked! I have no idea what the difference is between that disc and the four other Xboxhdm discs, but this one worked, and now I have a softmodded xbox with a larger hard drive! Hooray!
Thanks for all your suggestions, guys!
