Hi All,
My first post. Having read through a quite a few other posts trying to get to grips with this stuff, I get the impression that this site is very friendly and willing to help us Neewbs, not like some others I visited. People forget, we all have to start somewhere!
Anyway, here are my first few dumb questions:
1. What's the difference between a skin and a dashboard?
2. I came across a post somewhere that ref'd to something by DJH about setting up SMB (SAMBA) but I can't seem to track it down in any forums. Can someone point me in the right direction please.
There it is then, that wasn't too painful. Looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with you all.
Cheers

Welcome to the site man.
Ok, first off: Dashboard and Skin.
The best way to think of these are to compare them with a PC. Say on your PC you have Windows XP with a picture of Space for your wallpaper.
Well, Windows XP is your operating system. In Xbox terms, its your dashboard. The dashboard is the program that acts as your operating system, giving you menus, access to programs etc. Most common dashboards are: EvoX, UnleashX, XBMC, Avalaunch.
The skin, is your wallpaper. Its the background picture and theme that your Xbox displays for you in your dashboard.
As for the SMB share, I'll see what I can find out for you.

Cheers guys, really encouraging words.
Got another little query for ya.
I've recently downloaded the AIDeluxe auto installer thingy as per an article by DJH I've copied it to DVD (firstly having been out and bought a DVD writer and installed it on my PC!) but now I don't know how to get the XBox to "boot from" this DVD. When I place it in the XBox drive nothing happens and the My files section on the XBox shows the drive as being empty. I've copied the whole folder intact as downloaded and the folder contains a bunch of RAR files. Do I have to remove the RAR files from the folder before I burn them to DVD? Or is there something else I'm not doing?
As ever, I await your wise words Oh great ones

You will need to modify the xbox in one of two ways to be able to read/install the AID dvd software. One being softmod, the other with a modchip. Well, three including tsop method. there are many articles/convo's/info in the forums on both soft and chip mods. I rec doing as much reading as possible on both to see what suits you best. You will get mixed feelings on both from various users. Again, read as much as possible, soak it in and feel free to ask away. _________________ XENIUM ICE 300GIG CUSTOM DVD

Ive heard/read it varries on dvd model which media works best. I personally have just used the cheapest media i could find without issue with just about every xbox dvd out there. Having said that, I would look into using a diff media brand, slowest writing speed possible and see if that makes a diff. If burned properly with good media, it should be recognised and read easily. What media are you using? What brand dvd rom in xbox? What software used to burn it? What speed did you burn at? What settings did you use? Did you use blank/junk file to increase size of AID on the disc? These are things that will help us help you. When you get a chance, look into them and get back to us. _________________ XENIUM ICE 300GIG CUSTOM DVD

Cheers Superman08012
I had a feeling it would be something like that. I had a good scout round the tutorials and noticed that all the factors you mentioned are important.
I'll gather that info and post it asap. In the meantime can you confirm that copying the folder complete is the way to do it? or should I copy the contents of the folder to the DVD?

There is your problem. If you did it the way im about to explain, then sorry, i didnt read EVERYTHING here.
First, extract the 1st rar file which will then create a folder with an ISO in it. also it may have some other files you want to add using the ISO Updater.
But you have to burn the ISO with a program such as dvd decrypyter, Nero burning rom, etc. This will create a bootable disc that the xbox can read. Once you have done this im sure you will be on the right road!
