Would just like to say thanks ever so much to Pirrup for his tutorial on hotswapping with a chipped xbox
My secondhand xbox had decided to not go along with the softmod I was trying to do and refused to show any dashboard at all but would run games. Unfortunately it was then left without power for a weekend (silly me forgot about it) and so of course would only show error 16 and refuse to boot anything at all by the Monday Thought I had really messed up and had to come clean to the other half resulting in much telling off and very red faces! I even resorted to ordering a DuoX2 chip and a new drive over the net as the xbox drive refused to hotswap into my pc.
Then I found this thread quite by accident and thought, why not, I'll give it a go. Luckily I have a chipped xbox also and after much soul searching (after all, I could have shorted that one out and lost 150Gb of stuff!) took it apart and tried the hotswap with an AID disk in the drive of the chipped one. Took a dozen tries but after counting to 7 seconds and swapping the drives I finally got the problem one unlocked and in the chipped box. Installed an up to date ms dash and backed that and the eeprom up and swapped back. Put it all back together and it worked like a charm You have never seen someone so happy as me!
Still took all afternoon for it to accept a softmod (finally took SID4.5 single boot and then used the latest AID3.10 to bring it all up to date - still no idea why it kept failing to work as its not the first one I've done) but it's fine and dandy now, thanks

I had a ver1.6 xbox (Nov 2005) that was giving me a nightmare on hotswap the way pirrup was saying in his tut. Now mind you I never had any problem before until this xbox came into my hands going by his tuts so by all means there is nothing wrong with it, but this may help with the touchier systems.
This was a last ditch option, beware!
1)Don't disconnect anything in your box
2)start it up, go through the flubber screen. You will notice the lag between the 'x' appearing and the microsoft logo appearing at the bottom. Once the 'x' appears disconnect the ide cable from the harddrive.
3)with tweesers, take the jumper from the back of the hd and move it from cable select to pri master.
4)start the computer, as it is powering up, connect the ide cable from computer to hd.
5)Continue as needed with xboxhdm.
Note number 1,3 and 4, these are the different things I did compared to normal hotswapping. Remember to move the jumper back to cable select when you're done with the hd.
I have done this method to a few box's to make sure it was not a fluke and all has been well so far, but as usual timing is the key. Make sure you disconect the ide cable in the box before the microsoft logo appears, best when the sound is finished when the 'x' appears, and make sure you connect the ide from your computer before it gets to the boot sequence.
Hope this helps out some people with those difficult box's

HOTSWAP:recover a hd without eeprom backup
Needed Tools:
- xboxhdm 1.9
- Torx 10 And Torx 20 Screwdrivers - To Open XBOX
- A PC(remove all hd's) ,blank CD-R/W and A CD Burner
- DVDdecryptor (http://www.dvddecrypter.com)
- C drive backup or latest MS dash
' Make sure the xbox and pc are close to echother '
Steps:
1. if you got a backup of your c you don't need to download latest msdash, if you don't got a backup download ms dash and keep it ready on your pc.
2. unpack xboxhdm onto your pc .
3. put ms dash in the C folder into the xboxhdmlinux folder and overwrite the ones already there.
4. In the root of xboxhdm is a file named 'make-iso-win', run this file and wait for it to finish.
5. It will make a .iso file. (burn this file with dvddecryptor), put the cd in the pc .
6. unplug the XBOX DVDROM IDE cable, take the power cable off the dvd-rom.
7. Turn on the PC, Before the PC BIOS looks for hard drives, hit the Pause/Break key. It should pause at this time.
8. Turn on the Xbox .
9. It will boot to an error code(nr 11) regarding the dvd-rom, but the hdd will be unlocked, this way you'll get xboxhdm to access it on first attempt Now remove ide from hd and swap it to the pc
10. Hit space bar to continue booting the PC. If it takes a long time to boot (several minutes), then the HD has not been unlocked.
11. you will get a menu, now choose Option 1 (by typing ‘1’) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ‘xboxhd’ when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ‘Build a new Xbox HD from scratch’) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. when it asks you about C type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes .
12. power down pc and xbox.
13. put the hd back in the xbox and boot.
Nice you just recovered your hard drive !!!
PS if you get a msg about a frozen drive , just disable auto detect for the drive (xboxhdm will detect the hd even if it's disabled!)
cheers
pirrup
usng this method...can I still get my E Folder files?
If not:
Isn't there anyway to ftp during hotswapping? or copying the E: Folder?

how are you all switching the power and IDE cable so quickly to the PC. Everytime i try it xboxhd says the drive is locked. I am one of the lucky people that only get error 12 to appear and the xbox i am working on only shows the "X" no "microsoft" below it. I need some help on how to time it since nothing out of the 17 pages in this discussion are working.

got my harddrive reinstalled! here's what you do if you have an error 16 and error 12 when u plug out ur cdrom.
1) boot up xbox with cables unplugged frm cdrom drive.
2) juz when the indicator on xbox starts flashing, pull off ide cable frm xbox. (drive is unlocked)
3) plug it into ur pc with power cord still attached from xbox to harddrive
4) run xboxhdm the usual way
5) or you can follow my method (esp when ur xboxhdm dun work..like my case)
i) boot up with pc harddrive on primary master and xbox hdd on secondary master.
ii) run xplorer360 and transfer all the required files. (takes a long time though)
iii) once done, unplug ide cable off the harddrive and plug it back to xbox(with xbox still running) remember to set ur jumper to as it is.
iv) power off xbox once all the required steps' done.
Thank you so much for these instruction as i have spend over a couple hours trying to do this swap.
What Worked for ME: pulled out drive right when it started flashing and just pulled out the IDE cable and left it plugged in to the Xbox... Thank Goodness. Thank you R and Pir.

I've probably thanked you before, but if not here's another.
I used this tutorial to fix my friends Xbox that had error 21. I also used this to mod my Xbox and install a larger hard drive later on. I did all of this stuff several months ago though.
I cant seem to get this to work. i unplug the dvd drive and power i get error 12 , when i connect the hdd to the pc ide and boot the llinux disk it says the xbox hdd is locked. any ideas?
I have the eeprom on the hdd E but i cant get to it as softmod went strange and i can only load retail ms dash.
what can i do to get the soft mod working. even the game saves dont boot sid5 it just reboots the game.
is there any other hacks other than sid that extract into a new location. i think its the sid thats corrupt but i cant delete it.
or can SID be made not to access the network at all. as i think thats whats causing the reboot... _________________ Xbox V1.3

if you have a mod chip that works too, if all else fails, theres a few methods, this being the cheapest way of doing it unless you have a solderless mod chip. _________________
