Square Enix to XBOX 2?

The maker of Final Fantasy likes what Microsoft has in the works.
As part of a recent company strategy briefing held in Japan for investors and press, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada fielded questions regarding a variety of topics, including Xbox support. One question asked of Wada was "Will you be supporting Xbox Live," to which Wada responded "Xbox Live is a closed system, so at this point we have no plans on supporting it." Apparently, though, a few of Microsoft's future plans have Wada excited.

Wada continued, "However, the thinking behind the recently announced XNA is extremely similar to what we have in mind. With that meaning, we'll have to from now on discuss XNA, rather than Xbox 2 and such." XNA is Microsoft's new set of integrated development tools, promising to simplify development on all fronts, Online and Off, accross multiple platforms including Windows PCs, Windows mobile devices and the next generation of Xbox. As development costs rise and multiplatform development becomes a must, numerous developers have expressed interest in the tools.

Wada's carefully worded statements may not be confirmation of next generation Xbox support, but it does suggest that if Microsoft keeps providing developers with tools like XNA, companies like Square Enix may very well be on board with support.
