The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has failed to grant a revised version of Rockstar’s Manhunt 2 a rating, saying that changes made to the game don’t go far enough. The BBFC said that the publisher had failed to heed its warnings regarding the game’s content and hadn’t sufficiently followed its suggestions for editing the title.

Manhunt 2 was originally rejected by the BBFC in June when the ratings body said that the title was “distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone.”

“We recognise that the distributor has made changes to the game, but we do not consider that these go far enough to address our concerns about the original version,” said David Cooke, director of the BBFC.

“The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the gameplay, is clearly insufficient. There has been a reduction in the visual detail in some of the ‘execution kills’, but in others they retain their original visceral and casually sadistic nature.

“… The decision on whether or not an appeal goes ahead lies with the distributor.”

The ESRB recently downgraded Manhunt 2 from an Adults Only rating to an to M for Mature following the submission of an edited version of the title, clearing the way for the game’s release in North America.
