We don't typically post rumors, but this one's a doozy.

According to 8BitJoystick, via the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Bungie would very much like to work on other properties besides Halo and in order to do so they're going to part ways with Microsoft. Jacob Metcalf of 8BitJoystick says he has "full faith in this contact" who is from inside the "Redmond loop."

"Apparently MS just wants Bungie to make Halo for the rest of their natural days, and Bungie doesn't like how MS is constantly trying to 'handle' everything they do; the way they market their games, the way they interact with their fans (basically the fact that they do appreciate their fans), and how stingie [sic] they are with the profits (comparable to the rest of the industry)," the source said. "So as of today they are their own independent entity. They'll probably make Halo 4 for Microsoft, however [t]hey are also free to create new intellectual properties for whatever system they want (even though they prefer the Xbox platform)."

GameDaily BIZ has contacted Microsoft for comment, and we'll be sure to update with any response. For the time being we advise you take this with a huge pile of salt.
[UPDATE] A Microsoft spokesperson has told us, "There's been no such announcement. We continue to celebrate the tremendous success of the global phenomenon that is Halo 3."
