Analysts: Teen Gamers Are Gaming Less

An article at Forbes declares that the videogame sector isn't playing games. The source of the information? A Piper Jaffray study which questioned 600 high school students about their gaming habits.

First, the results: 82% of students owned a game console, 53% of the pool owned multiple consoles. But which ones? Here's the breakdown: 67% own PS2s, 39% own a Microsoft Xbox and 27% own a GameCube. Seventy-percent of teens surveyed reported that they intend on scaling back their gaming this year. That number is down from 75% last year.

For regular readers, this survey shouldn't come as a shock. As recently as last week, we reported that adults were playing games for 10 hours a week longer than kids. As gaming ages, the number of people exposed to it increases - as a result those gamers whose parents might have looked at them with a furrowed brow in 1983 while they played have grown up - and they are still gaming.

So while the Forbes' piece is titled "Videogame Sector Not Playing Games," it might be the case that we need to rethink just who the videogame sector is.
