August NPD stats: Xbox' share grows

For the month of August 2004, the console market saw retail sales of $337 million, off 4 percent sequentially from the $350 million tallied in July, but up 4 percent year to date. Compared to August 2003, sales were up 1 percent. One analyst said year-to-date sales were $2.76 billion through August 2004, compared with 2003 year-to-date sales of $2.66 billion.

This is the tenth consecutive month that Xbox grew its market share year-over-year.

Market share from hardware unit sales increased 13 points from August 2003 (27 percent) to August 2004 (40 percent). During the same time, PS2 dropped 15 share points from 54 percent to 39 percent. GameCube picked up two points from 18 percent to 20 percent.

Xbox software sales increased 56 percent from August 2003 to August 2004, while PS2 increased five percent, and GameCube only one percent.

Xbox’s software-attach rate remained an industry-leading 7.2 in August (7.9 with bundled games) continuing to give Xbox the highest cumulative attach rate of any console after more than two years in the market.Source: Gamespot.com
