August 18, 2004 - Publisher Majesco announced today that it will bring gamers the deep-sea thrills we've been lacking until now: an officially-licensed Jaws game, set to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of Spielberg's classic in summer of 2005.

Developed by Appaloosa (of Ecco the Dolphin fame), Jaws will be an underwater action-adventure where you take the role of an angry, deadly Great White. Your goal is to drive away raiders who are polluting the waters with pernicious oil drilling vibrations. The game will feature a number of action-based puzzles, along with the visual beauty and oceanic control that Appaloosa is known for.

"Without a doubt, Jaws is one of the most revered classics of all time. The film's mixture of action, adventure and suspense terrified the masses," said Jesse Sutton, chief executive officer of Majesco. "The game will capture that same action and excitement as the movie, but this time, the shark enjoys some pay-back."

"Jaws was an instant hit, a phenomenon, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike," said Bill Kispert, vice president of Interactive at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group. "It was an adrenaline-charged experience. With Jaws, the game, we want to give players that same adrenaline rush as they control the power and the fury of a Great White."

If the new Jaws game sounds similar to Appaloosa's previously announced Sole Predator (in which players take the role of a -- yes -- Great White shark), that's no coincidence. The two projects are the same game, as Appaloosa developed Sole Predator with the Universal film in mind while hunting for the license. You can check out an early preview of the game from its initial development days to get an idea of how the game will work and how complex its game engine is -- we'll have a better look at the game's growth into becoming the mammoth Jaws as development continues.

Look for Jaws to hit next summer for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. And of course, we'll have more details for you as soon as they come in.
